Users:  Laptops machines are available for checkout to CS department faculty, staff and researchers.

Duration: 2 weeks (variable)*

Policy:  During the laptop checkout period, users may install/deinstall any programs or operating systems (OS) they like.  However once the machine is returned, the files, programs and/or operating system the user has installed may be wiped off by the next user.  Users are responsible for transferring their files off the laptop prior to returning it.

Support and Maintenance:  Laptops are checked out in "as is" condition with no guarantees that any operating system will be installed or that the laptop/applications will be in running condition.  Disks for installing Windows 98, Microsoft Office (Small Business Edition) and Power Point are available upon request.  The Computer Security Laboratory is not responsible for support or maintenance of laptop machines.

Laptop Requests:  Please complete a laptop request form at least one day in advance. (The request form is available as a Word form by sending an e-mail to Patty Graves or download a pdf of the form here). If you need to take the machine out of the building, please submit a request at least two days in advance for processing of equipment forms. This signed equipment form must be carried with the laptop at all times.  It proves that you have permission to move UC property off campus.  To guarantee availability of laptops, requests must be received two weeks in advance. Users may not check out more than one machine at any given time.

Removable Hard Drives:  For those of you who will be checking out laptops regularly, you may want to consider purchasing a removable hard drive from the Security Lab for $350 and install the OS and applications of your choice.  You will need to provide your own OS license and application software.

*Checkout times have often extended well over the 2 week time limit due to limited numbers of requests.  However, if laptops are in higher demand, the two-week policy will start to be enforced.  Users will be notified the day before machines need to be turned in.
