Equipment Need/Problems
Research Problems
Determine Schedule for Seminars (see http://seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu/secsem/index.html)

Equipment Purchases:

1 router
10 work stations ² Dells, PCs, Ultras
4 lap tops ² lockable cabinet/checkout system, how to manage configuration of lap tops ² assign each to person, have one floating for individual use.
1 term server
Extra $ on servers
Group needs database server.  Jason needs a Palm Pilot.  The idea is to retire older machines and use them as infrastructure.  Also buy more Ethernet cards and turn them into routers.

LCD Projector $5,000-6,000 ² can get them from AD.  Should the department buy it or the lab?  Some people suggested there would be more hassles if the department bought it.

Ideas for Recruiting New Graduate Students

Mail brochure/cover letter to every school/advisor in U. S.
Outside Seminars to Bay Area and Southern California Schools (UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, Humboldt State)
Interested Students
Jeremy ² Harvey Mudd student
Terry Gilbert ² wants to join the program from Santa Cruz, but cannot relocate immediately
Incoming Graduates ² currently 39 + 10 more in January
Pizza Party for Undergraduates
Newsgroups ² Email Security Postings
Security Script News Groups
Adds in Publications (ACM)
Extension/National University (working in computer science or security)
PR through Wall Street Journal
A comment was made that the Security Lab is lacking a complete package for recruiting graduates.  Requirements, assurances of RA, and a follow-up process need to be known and/or created.
