Stuart Staniford-Chen

is a Researcher in Computer Security at the University of California, Davis.

Research Interests and Experience

During his Ph.D. studies in Physics, Dr Staniford-Chen worked on new algorithms for simulating Quantum Field Theories, and new statistical techniques for analyzing simulation results.

Since joining the Computer Security Group at UCD, he has been the leader in a project to track users across a large network as part of the group's work funded by ARPA. This involves computing a "thumbprint" of each connection, namely a signature of the connection which is essentially invariant under propagation delay, clock skew, and packet loss. Dr Staniford-Chen developed statistical procedures to compute and compare thumbprints in an efficient manner.

He has also been actively involved in developing models of computer security and a communications architecture for use in the groups ARPA funded work.

Education

Dr Staniford-Chen received his B.Sc. in Mathematical Physics with first class honors from the University of Sussex, U.K. in 1988. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California at Davis where he received Regent's Fellowships for three years in a row. He also received the M.S. in Computer Science there in 1995.
