University of California, Davis Department of Computer Science UC Davis is the third largest and most academically
diverse of the nine campuses of the UC system. The campus enrolled
30,229 students in fall 2003, of whom over 6,000 were graduate and
professional students. Academic resources include a library of 2.3
million volumes, ranked among the top research libraries of North
America. Among its many distinctions, UC Davis ranks among the nation's
top 15 universities in research funding. It has been ranked by "U.S.
News and World Report" as 11th among public universities nationwide.
The University and adjoining town of Davis are located in the Sacramento Valley, 15 miles (25 km) west of Sacramento
and 74 miles (123 km) northeast of San Francisco and the Bay Area.
With a population of approx. 60,000, Davis is a small, friendly college
town, that has a widespread appreciation for open space and community
recreation. Davis has many greenbelts and 18 landscaped parks with
tennis courts, playgrounds and swimming pools, in addition to miles
of bicycle and jogging paths linking all parts of the town and the
campus. The town supports a local musical theater company, a community
art and crafts center, a vibrant recreation program, a community golf
course, and a teen center. There are abundant opportunities for sports
and recreational activities, with more than 50 miles of bicycle paths,
and close proximity to the slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains,
the seashore of the Pacific Ocean, the historic Mother Lode, and the
famed Napa and Sonoma Valleys.
